Blog SOOT Space
SOOT was formed in 2005 under the name Canongate Community Forum by residents in the Old Town of Edinburgh concerned about the proposed Caltongate development which promoted the demolition of listed buildings and homes in the Canongate. Despite wide reaching support for the Save Our Old Town campaign, consent for Caltongate was approved in 2008, however developers Mountgrange went into administration early in 2009 when the scheme was described as toxic debt by backers HBOS. SOOT will continue to campaign for more sustainable developments which serve the needs of residents and for the protection of sound and historic buildings from unnecessary demolitions. We will challange undemocratic decision making, promote the protection of our common good assets and provide information, opportunities and events for the community who live in the city centre to grow stronger.
